College Hockey South Week 9 has come and gone, and here are the three stars that came out on top:
1st Star - Marisa Bonilla, University of Florida (Women’s) - 3 Goals, 4 Assists, 7 Points in 1 Game Played
CHS’ Women’s Division continues to impress, claiming the First Star for the second week in a row. This week’s star, Marisa Bonilla, led the Gators offensively to a 10-1 domination of the Florida State Seminoles.
In the Gators’ single game against the Seminoles, Bonilla had a hand in 7 of the 10 goals scored by her team. She assisted Beth McArthur twice in the first to put her name on the scoresheet.
Bonilla then went on to score three goals of her own and assist in two more. Bonilla’s impressive performance led to Florida’s first win of the season, something the Gators will hope to ride as they return home for the first time to face the Seminoles twice more on November 8th and 9th.
2nd Star - Grant Dietz, University of South Florida (M3) - 6 Goals, 1 Assist, 7 Points in 2 Games Played
This isn’t the first week that South Florida’s Grant Dietz has graced the Three Stars of the Week, and it likely won’t be the last. In the Ice Bull’s Halloween two-game series against the Tampa Spartans, Dietz was the team’s leading goalscorer, tallying three goals a game.
In game one, Dietz opened up scoring with an early goal in the first, followed by a second goal later in the period. The Spartans struggled to respond with goals of their own, and another Dietz goal in the third gave the Ice Bulls a 6-2 win.
Game two proved a tougher fight, but the Ice Bulls ultimately swept the series, scoring five straight goals to put a stop to the Spartans. Two of those goals were by Dietz’s hand, including a power play goal in the third. The final score of game two was 9-5.
The South Florida Ice Bulls continue an impressive 11-2-1 record, and that’s undoubtedly in part thanks to Grant Dietz.
3rd Star - Ryker Ferry, University of Miami (M3) - 1 Goals, 4 Assists, 5 Points in 2 Games Played
Our Third Star of the Week puts the University of Miami on the map with an impressive five points in two games. Center Ryker Ferry proved over the weekend to be a valuable asset for the Hurricanes when creating scoring opportunities. The Miami Hurricanes could be looking at a season turnaround after a successful series against Embry-Riddle.
Game one was an offensive battle, with ERAU and Miami trading goals for the duration of the game. Ferry scored his lone goal of the series in game one, with an assist by Chris Michelini. Game one ended in a 4-4 tie.
Game two saw two Ferry assists, including a goal with two seconds left in the second period that extended the Hurricanes’ 4-2 lead heading into the third. The Hurricanes secured the win in the second game of the series, 5-3.
Congratulations to Marisa Bonilla, Grant Dietz and Ryker Ferry for earning honors as College Hockey South’s Three Stars of Week 9!
