Game of The Week: University of Alabama (D1) vs. University of Tennessee (D1)
The Game of the Week for Week 5 took place in Knoxville, TN, where the Tennessee Ice Vols hosted the Alabama Frozen Tide.
This was Tennessee's first conference series as a Division 1 team since being promoted during the offseason. The Ice Vols answered any questions about their readiness to compete with their performance against Alabama.
Forward Will Schneider powered Tennesse to a two-game sweep over Alabama. The right winger came into the weekend with 8 points in the club’s first five outings but rocked the Frozen Tide with 6 points over the weekend.
After registering only one assist in Tennessee’s 3-2 win in game one, Schneider led the charge with 5 points (1 goal and 4 assists) in a dominant 6-2 win on Sunday.
Tennessee remains unbeaten on the season with a record of 6-0-1 and a perfect 2-0 in the conference. With the losses this past weekend, Alabama’s winless streak runs to six games.
Kennesaw State University (D3) vs. Georgia Institute of Technology (D2)
The battle of I-75 was renewed between the Kennesaw State Owls and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, and the rivalry lived up to the billing.
The Owls claimed the game one, downing the Yellow Jackets by the score of 6-3. Three players, including defenseman Christian Sousa, achieved multi-point games for Kennesaw State. Owls’ goaltender Connor Lakly was exceptional, stopping 44 of 47 Georgia Tech shots.
Fueled by their loss, the Yellow Jackets returned the favor by defeating the Owls in their second game, 6-2.
Georgia Tech prevailed in the heated contest primarily due to the hat-trick scored by Jack Gawlick. The victory over Kennesaw State is the first for the Yellow Jackets this season. The Yellow Jackets were winless in their first six games of the year.
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (D2) vs. University of Tampa (D2)
The Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) Eagles dueled against the University of Tampa Spartans in a home-and-home series of games.
The meddling Middletons ran wild on Embry-Riddle across two different venues.
In game one, a 6-1 Tampa Win, Nicholas McMillan scored twice for the Spartans as they cruised past the Eagles. Matthew McMillan followed his brother’s lead in game two, scoring two goals, including the game-winner.
After the Spartans' previous games were canceled due to Hurricane Helene, their two wins against Embry-Riddle started their season on the right foot.
University of Miami (W) vs. University of South Florida (W)
On Saturday and Sunday, the women’s hockey teams for the University of Miami Hurricanes and the University of South Florida Lady Bulls competed against each other at AdventHealth Center Ice. Both teams were scheduled to play in the Columbus Classic until the tournament was canceled due to Hurricane Helene.
In game one, the Lady Bulls and Hurricanes went to overtime knotted at 3. Miami carried a 3-2 lead into the third period but gave up the tying goal to South Florida’s Jules Eisenberg around the halfway point of the frame. Eisenberg struck again for the Lady Bulls in overtime to give her team the victory.
Miami earned a series split with a 7 goal outburst in game two. Megan Malolepszy potted a hat-trick for the ‘Canes while adding two assists.
Georgia Southern University (D3) vs University of Georgia (D3)
A first-time-ever in-state matchup concluded our weekend after the Georgia Southern Eagles took on the Georgia Ice Dawgs.
Georgia rudely welcomed the Eagles to College Hockey South with a 19-4 whooping. Ten different Georgia skaters had multi-point games, including Will Celli, who racked up 5 goals and 3 assists.
