As the first half of the season draws to a close, three forwards in particular shone in Week 12 to cap off their respective teams’ fall semester slates.
1st Star: (F) John Magner - University of North Florida (D3): 4 Goals, 2 Assists, 6 Points in 1 game
Propelled by forward John Magner, the North Florida Ospreys defeated the South Florida Ice Bulls (D3) last Friday, 11-7. Before the matchup, Magner had yet to collect his first point of the 2024-25 season, yet he tallied six (4G, 2A) in 60 minutes to claim his spot as the first star of the week and tie for sixth overall in points for his team.
The Ospreys were down 3-1 by the end of the first period, 5-3 by the end of the second, and 6-3 within the first three minutes of the third, but Magner proved one thing to be true: the game is never over until it’s over.
Magner collected one assist in the first 40 minutes of play, followed by a five-point (4G, 1A) third period. He opened the final frame with a natural hat trick, tying the game at 6. The Ospreys took a 7-6 lead with 11:41 left in the contest, but the Ice Bulls equalized with a power-play goal just 3:40 before the final buzzer. Within those last three and a half minutes, North Florida netted four more goals, one of which Magner assisted, to solidify its 11-7 victory.
With the win, the Ospreys improved to 2-9-0 in the College Hockey South Division 3 South standings.
2nd Star: (F) Hunter Litman - Florida Atlantic University (D2): 2 Goals, 2 Assists, 4 Points in 1 game
The Florida Atlantic Owls swept the Central Florida Knights last weekend, 8-2 on Friday and 4-3 on Saturday. For Hunter Litman, this week’s second star, Friday night’s dominant win began with two assists in the first period.
Litman bookended the scoring in the middle period, tallying the game-winning goal less than four minutes into the second and another with just eight seconds remaining. Up 5-0 with 20 minutes to go, the Owls cemented their win in the third period, trading a pair of goals with the Knights to bring the final score to 8-2.
The following day, Florida Atlantic completed its sweep of Central Florida with a 4-3 win, improving to 11-2-1 (8-1-1) and coming in second in the College Hockey South Division 2 South standings, trailing only the South Florida Ice Bulls.
3rd Star: (F) Ryan Bailey - University of Georgia (D1): 2 Goals, 2 Assists, 4 Points in 1 game
Forward Ryan Bailey collected four points during the Georgia Ice Dawgs (D1) convincing 10-3 win over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Friday night. His four-point night increased his total to 24 points on the season, coming in at fifth overall in the College Hockey South Division 1 rankings.
After the Yellow Jackets took an early 1-0 lead on the power play, Bailey notched his first point of the night with an unassisted goal in response, acting as the first domino in the Bulldogs’ impressive night. The forward collected an assist on the go-ahead goal just 56 seconds after his first.
After a goal in the second period, Bailey collected his fourth and final point on centerman George Mesaros’s power-play goal just 2:25 into the final period. The Ice Dawgs capped off their double-digit win with a goal from Lleyton Poole with 7:18 left on the clock.
With the win, the Ice Dawgs improved to 11-0-2 overall (8-0-2) and remained atop the College Hockey South Division 1 standings with 18 points.
Congratulations to John, Hunter, and Ryan for being named our Three Stars of the Week!
