Game of the Week: Colorado Mesa University (M3) at Florida Gulf Coast University (M3)
Our Game of the Week… is the only game of the week!
First-year College Hockey South member Florida Gulf Coast wraps up its fall semester against the Colorado Mesa Mavericks in a matchup of top 40 ACHA M3 teams.
Colorado Mesa is coming off a 4-3-0 November, which ended with a pair of road losses to the Colorado School of Mines. In fact, all three of the Mavericks’ losses in November came at the hands of the Orediggers.
The Eagles followed up their strong 5-1 November with a respectable split against the 11th-ranked UMass Minutemen. FGCU took the series opener with the help of Brett Cameron and Jacob Langerich, who each had three points in the 3-2 victory. UMass left South Florida with a split after scoring two late goals in a 3-1 decision the following day.
The scores from last weekend’s series follow a season-long trend for FGCU: stellar defense.
The Eagles lead the conference in goal-against average, allowing just 2.53 goals against per game. FGCU is one of only three CHS M3 teams that allow fewer than three goals per game (Middle Tennessee State and South Carolina). That kind of team defense gives Florida Gulf Coast a chance against every team they play, and makes them a strong candidate to advance to ACHA Nationals.
With conference playoff standings hinging on ACHA rankings, no game lacks importance, so the Eagles will need to bring their “A” game this weekend to keep a spot in the field of 12.
