Week 13 of College Hockey South brought the heat all around, but here are three players that stood out to us:
1st Star - Jack Richey, University of Mississippi (M3) - 4 Goals, 2 Assists, 6 Points in 2 Games Played
Our First Star hails from Ole Miss (M3), a team that’s had a 5-game hot streak since defeating Arkansas 2-1 in overtime back in November. Center Jack Richey dominated in the series against APSU, leading the team offensively and helping deliver two more wins to Oxford.
In game one, Richey first got his name on the scoresheet at the top of the second, being the primary assist on the Ice Rebels’ third goal of the night, scored by Brendan Landrigan. In the span of just 9 minutes, Richey fired off three goals of his own, starting and completing his hat trick for the night and helping lead Ole Miss to a 10-6 domination of the Governors.
Game two saw an unassisted goal from Richey in the third period, as well as a primary assist on the Rebels’ 6th and final goal of the night, bringing his series tally to 6 points. Ole Miss ends the fall semester on a 5-game win streak, and Jack Richey definitely had a hand in the impressive showing. The Rebels will look to maintain that streak when they return to the ice to compete in the Arkansas Showcase January 16th-18th and then LSU (M3) in Oxford on January 23rd and 24th.
2nd Star - Cole Widen, Florida Southern College (M3) - 2 Goals, 3 Assists, 5 Points in 2 Games Played
This is the second week in a row a Florida Southern Moccasin has been named to CHS’s 3 Stars of the Week, and for good reason. Following in the footsteps of Will Marshall in Week 12, Cole Widen is this week’s Second Star.
Widen scored his first goal of the series against St. Leo in the second period of game one, assisted by dominant center Will Marshall. Power play opportunities were abundant in this game, and the Mocs did not hesitate to capitalize on them. The third power play goal of the night was scored by Marshall, with Widen tallying another point with the primary assist. The Mocs continued to dominate and finished game one 8-2.
Even more offensive success was achieved by Florida Southern in game two, as the Mocs shut out the Lions 10-0. Widen proved himself as a playmaker throughout the game, assisting two goals, both scored by Michael Izzo. Widen found the back of the net early in the third himself, finishing the weekend with two goals and three assists. Over the weekend, the Moccasins outscored the Lions 18-2, making a final statement in their last series of the semester.
3rd Star - Rhys Legault, Kennesaw State University (M3) - 3 Goals in 1 Game Played
Our Third Star, Rhys Legault, helped break Kennesaw State’s 5-game losing streak with an impressive performance against the Tennessee Ice Vols. The Owls had been on a downward spiral since the Veterans Cup in November, being outscored 11-51 across five road games. They returned home to Kennesaw for their final game of the semester, defeating the Ice Vols 5-2.
The freshman made a statement in the last game of his debut semester, earning himself a hat trick this past weekend. Legault opened the scoring for the Owls on Friday with a goal in the first. He went on to score again in the second, and closed scoring late in the third with an assist from Christian Sousa.
Kennesaw will return to home ice on January 16th to face APSU for a two-game series.
Congratulations to Jack Richey, Cole Widen and Rhys Legault for earning honors as College Hockey South’s Three Stars of Week 13!
