The University of Georgia wins its 10th Savannah Hockey Classic​

​

SAVANNAH – This year’s Savannah Hockey Classic marked the 25th year of the biggest and most successful college hockey tournament in the South, along with the University of Georgia’s 10th win at the event.

The first round of games on Friday, Jan. 12, placed bitter rivals against each other. In the first game, the University of Florida took down the University of Tennessee in a decisive 5-1 win. Just a couple hours later, Georgia made an even bigger showing against Georgia Tech with a 7-1 win.

In the third-place game, Tennessee brushed off its loss to Florida with a 7-3 win against Georgia Tech. The championship game, on the other hand, put the Florida-Georgia rivalry on full display. The teams kept the game close, but Georgia found the lead and held off Florida for a 4-3 victory.

This year’s event was another showing of success by College Hockey South (CHS) and its partners. The tournament has a strong, 25-year history, with no signs of slowing. CHS Commissioner Kyle Knell said this tournament is proof hockey at the collegiate level can succeed in the South.

“The new format of the tournament brought a lot of anticipation and excitement to the championship game,” Knell said. “We hope that this tournament can prove to not only the schools, but also the fans that hockey can be successful at the collegiate level. We plan to continue to build on the success of this tournament year after year. This is just the beginning.”
