Another weekend of hockey came to a close, and players have found their rhythm and lit up the scoreboard en route to team victories.
1st Star: William Hurlburt - University of Tennessee (D3): 5 goals, 2 assists, 7 points in 2 games
The University of Tennessee Ice Vols opened their season in a dominant fashion, sweeping their weekend series against Austin Peay State University. Over the course of the two games, the Ice Vols scored 26 goals and only had one goal against.
Game one ended with a 16-1 win, while they completed the 10-0 shutout in game 2.
“As a team I think we did a great job doing what we needed to do. Working hard, competing, and playing blue collar hockey,” head coach Aidan Zimmerman said.
While the entire Ice Vol offense was rolling this weekend, right winger William Hurlburt led the way with five goals and two assists. Four of his goals came in the second game.
“It was a great first weekend,” Hurlburt said. “All the guys bought in and played a great team game. Each line did their job and we played two great team games.”
2nd Star: Connor Benoit - University of Tennessee (D3): 4 goals, 2 assists, 6 points in 2 games
With two games reaching the double-digit goal mark, another Ice Vol had a standout performance this weekend. Forward Connor Benoit scored four goals and assisted on two additional goals.
Benoit had a hat trick in the first game of the series.
“It was a strong start to the season for us and I was happy to see the new guys playing well and finding success off the bat,” Benoit said.
On the rest of the season Benoit said, “We still have a long way to go as a team, but this is good momentum to carry into our tough stretch coming up.”
The Ice Vols will look to continue their dominance as they take on Eastern Kentucky University this weekend in a two-game series.
3rd Star: Michael Woll - Florida Southern College (D2): 2 goals, 2 assists, 4 points in 1 game
Florida Southern College might have come away with a 4-4 tie in their lone game against the University of Central Florida, but forward Michael Woll played a part in each of the four goals the Moccasins put up.
Woll’s goals came within a minute of each other in the second period, the first being a short-handed goal, while the latter was unassisted.
“He returned to school in great condition and it’s showing in his early success,” head coach Gilles Richard said. “We are all looking forward to watching his sophomore season.”
As the season kicks off, these impressive early stats suggest we’ll be seeing plenty of these three stars shining brightly throughout the months ahead!
