Game of The Week: University of Georgia (D1) vs. University of South Carolina (D1)
The South Carolina Gamecocks followed their National Championship banner-raising with a rousing three-goal comeback to win 4-3 in the shootout Friday night.
The Ice Dawgs led the first period, with George Mesaros (26) scoring the first goal unassisted in the first five minutes.
Dylan Punzenberger (15) and Evan Moore (18) followed closely behind, scoring the Ice Dawgs last two goals within the first period.
The Gamecocks Marco Pineda (9) added to the scoreboard in the second period with less than nine minutes left. Pineda continued the momentum by scoring two minutes into the third period during a power play.
The Ice Dawgs continued to lead in the final period, but with five minutes left, Gamecocks John Riggins (25) was assisted by Tommy Marvin (6) to even the score.
The stalemate continued through overtime, but South Carolina prevailed in the shootout to complete the comeback.
Florida Atlantic University (D2) vs. University of Tampa (D1)Â Â
The weekend series between the Owls and Spartans concluded with a 4-2 victory for Tampa in game one and a 3-2 upset win for Florida Atlantic in game two.
Spartans started the first game of the series by racking up two goals during the first period from Robert Seewagen (91) and Alexander Moeller (12).
The Owls scored their first goal of the season by Jason Theander (76) in the second period but were bested by Tampa when Tim O’Connell (6) scored the game-winning goal six minutes later.
The first period of game two ended with Tampa’s Jake Stapert (12) and Florida Atlantic’s Emilo Stabile (2) scoring, leaving the teams tied 1-1.
Both teams held down their side of the rink in the second period until Stapert scored with 46 seconds left, putting the Spartans ahead.
The Owls pushed through in the final period after Brady Baehser (75) tied up the score within the first four minutes, and Stabile scored his second goal of the night, the game-winning goal.
A seismic upset starts the season off on the right foot for Florida Atlantic, which faces a large void following the departure of David Israel, Matias Weir and Jake Friedman.Â
University of Central Florida (D2) vs. University of Miami (D2)
The Knights began the weekend series 4-3 in game one, but the Hurricanes returned serve with a 4-2 victory in game two.
Game one started fast with both teams scoring within the first three minutes of the game.
The Knights pushed ahead after Rhett Hopkins (11) scored during the first period, but Miami’s Kyle McGuire (8) scored in the second period, leaving the teams tied 2-2.
Both teams scored during the third period, pushing the game into overtime, where Robert Renner (21) scored the game-winning goal for Central Florida.
Miami went into game two, ready to dominate, scoring three goals in the first period.
The Knights scored two goals to cut into the Miami lead but fell short when Miami’s Adam Berg (11) finished strong, scoring the last goal of the night in the third period. Â
University of Mississippi (D3) vs. Eastern Kentucky University (D3)
The Division 3 Ice Rebels hit the road for their first-ever appearance in a College Hockey South game against the Eastern Kentucky Colonels this past weekend.
Game one ended with a 6-4 victory for the Colonels. EKU’s Phillip Harrell (44) earned a hat-trick, potting the first three goals of the night.
The third period concluded with EKU’s Ethan Cross (6) scoring one goal with four minutes left and another with 26 seconds left.
The Ice Rebels earned a series split in game two with a 7-2 win. They scored two goals in the first and second period, putting them ahead 4-2.
Jonathan Bragg (4) and Quinn Waddell (19) finished the game by scoring a total of three goals.
Waddell scored the last two goals, making him the top scorer for the Ice Rebels in the second game.
University of Alabama (W) vs. University of Georgia (W)
The Frozen Tide dominated their first weekend series in history, sweeping the Ice Dawgs with scores of 15-2 in game one and 12-4 in game two.
Morgan Grzybowski (39) opened the blowout by adding two of the six goals made to the scoreboard in the first period, and the goals kept coming.
Alabama freshman Claire Carson (14) and Samantha Lantz(4) were the top scorers in game one, each scoring a hat trick. Â
Game two started slower, with the Ice Dawgs holding their ground in the first period.
However, the dynamic duo of Lantz and Carson scored unassisted goals within one minute of each other and started Alabama's scoring parade.
The Frozen Tide scored two more times in the second period before Paige Oukes (18) and Georgia Verheyden (24) scored, putting the Ice Dawgs on the board. With the Frozen Tide leading the game 4-2, they secured their win after scoring four more goals within five minutes of the second period ending.
