The season's final weekend before playoff season has come and gone, and it’s time to get serious! Divisions 2 and 3 still have three weeks until their playoff tournaments, but we are days away from crowning the Division 1 and Women’s Division conference champs. But excuse us for daydreaming, let’s recap Week 16!

Game of the Week: University of Tennessee (D3) vs. University of South Carolina (D3)

The University of South Carolina Gamecocks wreaked havoc in their weekend series against the University of Tennessee Ice Vols, ending Friday night with a final score of 3-2 and Saturday with a 4-0.

The Gamecocks’ John McAdams kicked off game one after he scored two minutes into the first period. McAdams’ goal was quickly followed by Sean Miller, who added one more goal for the Gamecocks, putting them ahead 2-0 by the end of the first period.

The Ice Vols’ Christopher Albert added his team to the scoreboard two minutes into the second period after he scored an unassisted goal. As the teams continued to hold their sides of the rink during the period, the Gamecocks’ Owen Newnam slung one more goal past the goalie, moving the score to 3-1.

The teams continued the fight into the last period as the Ice Vols took eight shots on goal, and Matt Turrisi scored the last goal of the night.

The Gamecocks started game two as fast as Friday’s game after Miller scored during a power-play after the Ice Vols’ Seth Hagan was penalized for cross-checking. With 14 minutes left in the first period, the Gamecocks scored another goal, pushing them up 2-0 after the first.

During the second period, the Ice Vols took six shots on goal while the Gamecocks shot 13 times, but neither team could secure another goal. Both teams defended their nets at the beginning of the third period until the Gamecocks secured two more goals and ended Saturday night with their 14th consecutive win.

University of Tampa (D2) vs. University of Central Florida (D2)

The University of Central Florida Knights could not redeem themselves against the University of Tampa Spartans in their weekend series, with the Spartans victorious 3-2 on Friday and 7-4 on Saturday.

Both teams began game one strong without giving up a goal until the Knights’ Carson Mueller put the puck in the back of the net with 10 minutes remaining in the first period. The teams heated up in the second period as the Knights scored another goal and the Spartans racked up two goals, leaving the teams tied, 2-2.

Nicholas Zehelein secured the Spartans’ win after he scored with three minutes left in the final period.

The Spartans started the battle on Saturday night after Lou Defalco scored during a powerplay in the first period. Both teams scored one goal in the second period, putting the Spartans ahead 2-1.

Florida State University (D3) vs. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (D3)

The Florida State University Seminoles added two more victories to their winning streak during their two-day matchup against the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Ice Eagles, 5-2 on Friday and 5-1 on Saturday.

The Seminoles’ Ryan Chambre initiated the scoring spree at the beginning of the first period after his team followed behind him, scoring two more goals, putting FSU in the lead at the end of the period, 3-0.

Chambre continued the fight into the second period after securing another FSU goal. The Ice Eagles scored their first goal of the night with three minutes remaining in the period. The last period concluded with each team adding one more goal to the board within seconds of each other.

Game two started slowly, with no goals scored between either team. Chambre kicked off the second period again, scoring in the first minute, and was joined by Edison Zucker, who scored the game-winning goal for the Seminoles.

The third period finished with the Seminoles racking up an additional three goals and the Ice Eagles’ Jason Culbertson scoring the only goal for the team on Saturday.

Kennesaw State University (D3) vs. University of Georgia (D3)

The battle between the Georgia rival teams concluded with the University of Georgia Ice Dawgs conquering the rink against the Kennesaw State University Owls, winning 6-4 on Saturday and 8-2 on Sunday.

The Ice Dawgs’ Matthew Schwanekamp headed into game one, ready for a fight after he scored two of the four goals that Georgia tallied in the first period. The Owls’ Robert Schutt put his team on the board after scoring his fourth goal on the season. Both teams slowed down in the second period, with each team adding one goal to the scoreboard.

University of Miami (D2) vs. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (D2)

The University of Miami Hurricanes brought the thunder on Friday, winning 3-2 during their weekend series against the Embry Riddle Aeronautical University Ice Eagles, but ended Saturday with a 5-5 tie.

Game one developed gradually as the first goal was scored with five minutes left in the second period by the Hurricanes’ Jaret Fensterstock. Both teams picked up in the last period after the Ice Eagles’ Alex MacCallum flew past the Hurricanes to score a power-play goal.

The last period concluded with the Hurricanes’ bringing home the win with an additional two goals scored and MacCallum fighting back after netting the final goal for the Ice Eagles.

The Ice Eagles were ready to dominate the rink in game two after Ryan Wegenke put his team on the board in the first 30 seconds. The Hurricanes put up two goals during the first period, but Wegenke tied the score before the period ended, 2-2.

In the second period, Miami scored on one of the ten shots taken against ERAU but let its guard down with five minutes left, leaving room for Ice Eagles to swoop in and rack up three more goals.

With the Ice Eagles in the lead at the start of the last period, the Hurricanes’ Mac Callaghan and Elian Estulin managed to even up the score, 5-5, before the night concluded.
