1st Star: Kylie McDonald, University of Tampa (W) - 1 Goal, 7 Assists, 8 Points in 2 GP
Tampa looked to continue its success in conference play and keep its undefeated record alive. The Lady Spartans did just that in their series against USF this past weekend, relying heavily on their offensive prowess to propel them to victory.
A large part of that offensive explosion was sophomore forward Kylie McDonald, who tallied 8 points over the weekend, 7 of them in the form of assists. McDonald was marked as a player to watch for the upcoming season, and she is living up to her potential.
McDonald’s goal on the weekend came in Game 1 at USF on Saturday, and was Tampa’s ninth goal of that game. Four of her assists on the weekend were primary, with only one being on the power play; the remaining came at even strength.
The Lady Spartans will continue to look to McDonald as one of their top producers in their next battle when they return to the ice in two weeks to face Florida on October 25.
2nd Star: Tommy Chunchukov, Middle Tennessee State University (M3) - 4 Goals, 3 Assists, 7 Points in 2 GP
Our second star of the week goes to MTSU’s Tommy Chunchukov, who tallied 4 goals and 3 assists in the Lightning's sweep of Lynn this weekend. Chunchukov led MTSU to a 10-4 win on Friday with 2 goals in the first 22 minutes, and 2 assists in the last frame.
The second contest of the weekend was a tighter one for MTSU, who took down Lynn 5-4 in OT. Chunchukov opened the scoring for the Lightning with a shorthanded goal after a tripping penalty sent his team to the kill. Chunchukov’s second goal of the game also did not come at even strength, as he tallied an unassisted goal on a power play in the second period. He then went on to capture a secondary assist on MTSU’s fourth goal of the game.
This MTSU team has only lost two games on the season, and remains undefeated in CHS play. The Lightning will look to continue this momentum in their upcoming in-state tilt against the Tennessee M2 and M3 teams on Friday and Saturday.
3rd Star: Jacob Graziotti, University of Central Florida - 1 Goal, 5 Assists, 6 Points in 2 GP
Jacob Graziotti captures our third star of the week, with 1 goal and 5 assists on the weekend for UCF at Kennesaw State. The Knights split the series at KSU, falling 5-3 on Friday before coming back for an explosive 8-6 win on Saturday.
Graziotti got on the scoresheet for UCF on Friday, finding a secondary assist on the team’s only even-strength goal and a primary on one of the two power play goals. He scored his lone goal on the weekend with forty-one seconds remaining in the first period on a shorthanded chance, and rounded out the game with two more assists.
The Knights will rely on production from their forwards, such as Graziotti, in their upcoming series against ERAU next month. UCF sits in the middle of the pack in CHS standings and will look to make a statement as it re-enters play.
Congratulations to Kylie McDonald, Tommy Chunchukov, and Jacob Graziotti for earning honors as College Hockey South’s three stars of Week 5!
